As I said on my last post since I finished The Company nearly a month ago I've been able to focus on all the other projects I have in different stages of development. Among them the one I've been working more intensely in is an RPG video game we've christened as the Old Folks Project.
I might talk about its more personal aspects in a later post but now I'd like to focus on its straightforward professional side. Four -soon five- people are working together designing a role-playing video game demo providing a few hours of game play that's planned to be ready in one year. The team consists of two ITs, an illustrator and a writer -me-, however at this point we all have our say in all the aspects of the game and when we'll have a proper design document then every one of us will get to work in our respective fields of expertise.

The experience's proving to be an extremely thrilling as it goes way beyond my usual role as a writer. As the project's co-founders my long-time friend Esteve and me hold the position of Project Managers, however as he's working I take most of the responsability for that duty. Although we take decisions democratically, making sure the job's done and deciding when a discussion's over and we've got to move on is something I had never done before and I'm learning a lot from. Apart from TV series and shows scriptwriting is most times a lonely job and you can get too used to work on your own so this project has also the advantage of providing me experience in project managing, team working and decision making, which I think will be useful for me as a professional.
Concerning the game itself, as it happens most times you don't fully realise a product's complexity until you try to do one yourself. As a gamer I was somewhat aware of how many decisions a video game maker has to take, but once I started working in one the actual number of choices you've got to make surpassed what I had in mind. The fact the game is an RPG probably plays its part on it as they are not exactly the simplest games you can find, but the feeling would have probably been the same in any other genre as the complexity expectations would had also been lower. At the moment we all have a somehow clear idea of what we want to do in most aspects -story, visuals, gameplay...- but still we have pages and pages of brainstorming and discussions for the most various aspects ranging to the biggest things to the smallest details, from where the game takes place in and what's that world's history to which enemies appear on each zone. We have a huge amount of work left to do, and I'm absolutely willing to continue working on Old Folks as it is one of the most exciting projects I've ever been involved in.

Just To Fuck: An RPG is a simple genere compared to some others. I'd say it's about in the middle of the spectrum.
