I should go down to Barcelona one of these days. Two of the projects I'm working in are set there so it would be a good idea to ramble up and down its streets. When you've lived next to a city like Barcelona for so long -and studied there too- you don't realise how beautiful it is anymore. I had forgotten it until last June, when I took an English friend in a stroll around it. We walked around the streets and alleys of Ciutat Vella ("Old City") for hours, and I was actually surprised about how many things I still remembered about its historical buildings and so. None of us had a camera -we went partying that night so bringing one wouldn't had been a good idea- so I'll do that small trip pretty soon but this time taking some pictures. As the projects are just rough outlines at the moment seeing where they take place will be very helpful, as I'll have visuals of the places some scenes could take place in and how the events would develop there. Woody Allen didn't do any justice to the city in Vicky Cristina Barcelona. He only showed the typical Barcelona postcards (Gaudí and so on) but in the historical centre there are lots of relatively unknown streets, courts, alleys, gardens... amazingly beautiful scenarios for many kinds of films... especially considering how dramatically Barcelona changes when the sun goes down. Finding locations is sometimes seen as something to do after the script's written, but when you want a story to be something it could only happen in a particular place then it should be done the other way around, so you can picture everything you're writing in the exact place, using the environment to develop it as if it was a living character.

Un dia d'aquests hauria de baixar a Barcelona. Dos dels projectes en els que estic treballant passen allà o sigui que seria bona idea anar-hi a donar un volt. Quan has viscut a prop d'una ciutat com Barcelona durant tant de temps -i hi has estudiat- ni tan sols t'adones de com n'és de bonica. Jo me n'havia oblidat fins el juny passat, quan vaig dur un amic anglès a fer-hi una mica de turisme. Vam passejar amunt i avall per Ciutat Vella durant hores... em va sorprendre la quantitat de coses que encara recordo sobre els seus edificis històrics. Cap dels dos duia càmera -vam sortir de festa així que dur-ne una no era bona idea- o sigui que ho tornaré a fer ben aviat però aquest cop fent fotos. Com que ambdós projectes encara són només esbossos generals, veure on passen és una bona idea de tenir idees visuals dels llocs exactes on podrien tenir lloc les escenes i com es podrien desenvolupar en aquells indrets. En Woody Allen no va fer gens de justícia a la ciutat a Vicky-Cristina-Barcelona. Només va mostrar les postals típiques (Gaudí, etcètera) però al casc antic hi ha un munt de carrers, carrerons, places i jardins relativament desconeguts, escenaris increïbles per molts tipus de pel·lícules... especialment tenint en compte el canvi dramàtic que pateix Barcelona quan es pon el sol. Trobar localitzacions normalment es veu com quelcom a fer un cop el guió està escrit, però quan vols escriure una història que només pugui passar en un lloc en concret aleshores s'hauria de fer a l'inrevés, perquè puguis imaginar-te tot el que passa en el seu lloc exacte, utilitzant el mateix escenari per desenvolupar-ho, com si fos un personatge més.
