The Novel / La Novel·la

First of all, here's an article that I found extremely enlightning. It's all about developing, writing and rewriting a story. It's script-oriented (and focused on the Hollywood film industry) but a fair share of its pieces of advice can be very useful to anybody involved in a story-based creative process.

These past days I've been reopening some of the projects I had on hold and I've worked on most of them to a certain extent. I'll try to write about some of the others in the next few days but today I'll focus on my novel. I finished -you know, "finished"- its first part last week and I'm moderately satisfied with it. In fact, I've received good reviews from the two people that have taken a look at it. However, as I tried to work on the remaining three parts problems started to arise all over the novel, and I found them closely related to some of the issues the aforementioned article deals with.

I started writing this novel knowing what I wanted it to be about. Its core. I also knew some of its events, characters and the like. I even had a sort-of-clear idea of how would it look like in terms of shape. The easiest way to describe it would be as a psychological coming-of-age novel. It's being written in free indirect speech and it doesn't follow a chronological order. I don't quite like the identification with the coming-of-age genre, and the novel surely has its differences from many of them, but my reluctance is probably more of a prejudice because of all the cheap novels this genre has spawned. There are some great ones, though, and I prefer to think of them.

Be it as it may, when I finished writing the first part I realised I have introduced some small changes on it, not as much on the events but in the way the protagonist lives and understands them. And as it happens often with stories, the smallest change can start a change reaction leading to a dire need of refurbishing its whole structure. This is not exactly what has happened on this case... let's just say that the structure wasn't as strong as it should by and thus it has trembled quite a lot for changes that otherwise would have required only some minor arrangements. It doesn't worry me much, though. This is a long-term project. I don't have expectations of having it finished anytime soon, and all the "unnecessary" extra work will also mean extra experience in -long- prose writing and in developing my characters' psychological aspects. Sometimes it's good to work in a different way.

Corollary: The butterfly / Corol·lari: La papallona

There's a butterfly rambling around my house. I hardly ever see butteflies in my hometown, and when I do they're normally small and white or pale yellow. This one's different, though. It's black and quite big, with white spots and an vivid orange lining on the wings. It comes and goes, and I see it every so often. Sometimes it's every two weeks, sometimes every month, and some other times I see it two or three days in a row. And of course it disappears during the coldest months of the winter. I know for a fact it can't always be the same: as far as I know butterflies live weeks, months at most. And still there's been one of such black butterflies in front of my house for the last two to three years. I don't know how many eggs do butterflies lay. They're probably a lot, but I always see just a lone butterfly. I've just seen it now, from my balcony, flying around at the beginning of October. I hadn't seen any for the last months, and although I didn't miss it I've felt a relief of some sort when I've looked down and I've seen a black and orange spot going up and down the street.

Thinking of what I wrote yesterday... No. The butterfly doesn't mean anything. Anything at all. Signs and symbols in life are even rarer in real life than they are in works of art. I just think it's a coincidence, something I'm lucky enough to see and to appreciate. Beauty is just this: beauty. And we should be more than content as it is. I don't want to make a message out of it, I tend to dislike people who are always talking about enjoying the little things. But I also find pleasure and comfort in it, at least from time to time. And I hope I'll keep on seeing a black butterfly in front of my house when I walk in or out.

No. La papallona no significa res.

Note: Mystification / Nota: Mistificació

A couple of days ago I was talking with a good friend and he mentioned something I've also thought a few times. When analysing works many critics especulate on their intentions. They look for hidden messages, morals, symbolic elements... As they observe very carefully every single detail of a piece of work, they think there must be more than meets the eye. They might not do it with works aimed at being blockbusters (especially in cinema and music) but you know what I mean.

It doesn't take much time into the creative world to realise how wrong they can be.

You are watching a movie and -I used the same example on the conversation- and you happen to see a poster hanging on a wall. It's likely that some critics -and university professors, too- might state that the poster symbolises... say, life's dynamism. Everything comes and goes just like you take posters out either to leave the wall as it originally was or to change it for other posters. Well, it could just be an aesthetic choice: the director liked the poster. Or it could be that they shot the scene at someone's place and the poster happened to be there. But it's fairly easy to find things if you focus on looking for them.

The message of all these being: we tend to take everything too seriously and to consider things that don't mean absolutely anything to be very important. Sometimes art it's just art and not every detail has been carefully thought of. Sometimes it just happens. And although sometimes it's true, it's also good to remember that -sorry, meme- not everything happens for a reason. We also have our share of meaningless things we have to put up with instead of trying to rationalise them. And I believe this also applies to the greater picture: life.

A vegades, simplement, passa.

Comeback / Tornada

I haven't posted in half a year. Not that I want to apologise -there aren't any dissapointed followers that I'm aware of-. I'm just stating a fact. That said, I don't feel like explaining my absence. Sometimes you just have other things to do than blogging or you don't have anything to share with whoever wants to read your thoughts. And I tend do write only when I have things to say. Or when I think it can be interesting to someone.

Some ten days ago I finished writing a feature film script I had been working in for the past few months. Well, when I say "finished" I mean that I have a draft that I found good enough to print. Re-writings are never to be ruled out. Be it as it may, I've considered it finished for the time being and I've focused on another script I started writing a while ago. Both movies are set in Barcelona and written in Catalan, but whereas one is a drama set in the mid-1930s, the other is a comedy set in the present time. Although the locations are not quite the same in both movies, I find writing about events happening in the same city very interesting as it makes you aware of how much it has changed, not just from the outside but also from the inside. But I don't want to start talking deep-looking bullshit. I just wanted to say I've finished writing a movie and I'm working on another one. In addition to that I'm also working on a small number of projects that may or may not end up well... And I'm considering trying really hard to get a full-time job. Virtually any job. That would leave me less time for writing (and thus I'd make the most of it) and also would make my life significantly easier, especially money-wise but in a handful of other aspects, too.

That's it for the moment. I'll try to write with a certain regularity once again. It would mean I have interesting things to tell every so often so it would be nice.

No he escrit res de res en mig any. I tinc tendència a escriure només quan tinc coses a dir.

Interests / Interessos

When I work on a project I sometimes pay attention to some aspects more than to others. I'm actually thinking of films but it also applies to prose to some extent.

On one hand you've got the story: What happens, to who, how, why. It's always the key, and you can't forget it. On the other hand, though, you've got how you tell all these things. Cinema is full of possibilities, and we've seen many times how an average story becomes a really interesting film. A not-so-bad content in an over-the-top shape. And every so often, for some reason, I'm drawn into the shape. Some times I might subconsciously know the story doesn't stand out and look out for a nice envelope that fits it and makes it better (NOTE: I shouldn't write this things down). Some other times I might just have a shape, a way of telling something, and I work the other way around, trying to figure out what to tell in that particular way. And some other times it's none of the above. Most scriptwriters write with actual camera shots in their heads. It helps writing, but they hardly ever make them explicit or care if their script is shot in a different way. For most of what I've written I don't think I would mind either. In the end, I enjoy writing, that's what I'm best at and most interested in. However, there is an exception: when I've got too much of a clear idea of how it should be. Or how I think it HAS to be.

The way you shoot and edit the movie, how you use the music... they can be just functional or indeed very powerful tools. While normally I try not to think about these things -I don't have much intention/ambition to direct most things I've written- sometimes I feel the story and the movie as a whole don't make sense without those elements. Just as an example: At the moment I'm working on a feature film treatment, and many of its ideas come from previous projects that didn't work well. But when I saw them fall together, I suddenly saw it as whole, not "just" as a script. I heard the soundtrack, I saw the shots, I saw that certain scenes would be pastiches paying homage to some works that have influenced me to some extent and that would add an important deal of subtext to what the audience would see. In the romantic artists' jargon, I had a vision of my work. And I'm working on it as a complete piece of work, not just as a script for somebody else to develop into a movie. I don't know what will happen -it DOES have potential and it wouldn't be expensive to produce-, but I'd really like to see it done the way it is in my mind.

Note: On Simultaneous Projects / Nota: Dels Projectes Simultanis

There goes a question I've asked myself lots of times: Why am I always doing so many things? Wouldn't be much easier to me to focus on one thing at a time? I've got two main reasons not to do that. The first one's essentially practical: When you start a project you never know if you're going to finish it. You may abandon it halfway through because you realise it's not worth the effort, or it may just crumble and fall by itself. So the more things you work in the better the odds. To an extent, of course. As simple as that, or at least this is how I see it. The second reason's got more do do with the creative process. Unless I got myself trapped on a creative high, I tend to struggle to work on the early stages of a project -the ones requiring more creativity and less craftmanship- if I'm not inspired. Using "inspired" as in "not in the best mood to approach this endeavour with the optimal outcome". When this happens, however, instead of keeping on working on the same thing -except of course if I must- I switch to another project. As they usually are on various stages of development, they might require different sets of skills, or maybe my state of mind suits better with their topics and tone and I'm just going to work more and better on it. And even if I leave a project aside for a while, it's always good to do it every so often so you can look at it again with a fresh mind and new ideas to improve it.

Tinc dues raons bàsiques per a no fer-ho.

Back to Square One: Moving On / Tornem a Començar: Seguint

I was going to call this second part The Best is Yet to Come, but then I thought it'd be too easy and too cheesy. And "Looking Forward" would be too predictable. So "Moving On".

To start, I had an idea long ago. It went through different incarnations but none of them was satisfactory. And then one of the worst things that can happen to a scriptwriter occurred: I saw an opening sequence. An awesome one. Script, shots and soundtrack. I also saw the ending sequence in the same exact way. I told myself "This is great... You have to figure out what happens between these two sequences". And this is... Hell. I've got a few ideas written down, glimpses at what could be. I'll try to create a consistent story. Everything's set in Barcelona and it wouldn't be costly to produce so it'd be fantastic to come up with a good plot and develop it into a full script.

I also plan to write a horror film. It starts with something that happened to me two years ago and takes some ideas from a story I wrote while in uni. I haven't used a thing of what I wrote back then but it has helped me developing the story, which is only a seven-pages outline at the moment. Interestingly, although I have a few screenwriting theories integrated in my storytelling process, I think it's the first time I'm consciously using Syd Field's Paradigm to write a story, paying attention to the plot points and so. I thought that a genre piece like these could benefit of following an established set of rules. And... there isn't really much more to tell about it apart so far, apart from the movie being set in a small, seaside village in Northern England.

Then there's the documentary I have in mind. It would be about video games, but I have only vague ideas so far. I have to choose the topics so I can have a clear driving force around which the whole story is built. I only have some lists that came out of a brainstorming session but I thought it deserved to be mentioned as it's something I'd really want to write and have done. Not that I don't have the same desire with the rest of my stuff but this is something different and quite more feasible so it's worth the try.

To finish, I switch from audio visual media to narrative. I'm writing... I guess the technical name for it would be novella. Too short to be a novel, too long to be a short story. I started writing it after re-watching Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex (Season 1 and Season 2). By the way, if you haven't watched it or the original movie it spawned from, DO IT. They're really good from sooo many points of view. Getting back to the topic, after watching the series I felt like writing a futuristic story. It's sort of a novella that contains some short stories. From where I stand -as I'm writing it- it has a number of layers that approach a range of topics that concern me or that I'm interested in. The story spans from the 1980s to the beginning of the 22nd century, making some stops on the way to make its points. Not that I want to teach anything, I just use the stories to reflect on a handful of things. I'm not even halfway through the writing so I won't say much more, but I'm quite enthusiastic.

I think this is pretty much everything, so I'll write again when I'll have news on these or other projects or whatever comes. We'll see...

Anava a titular aquesta segona part The Best is Yet to Come però després he pensat que seria massa fàcil i massa cursi. I "Mirant Endavant" seria massa previsible.

Guió, plans i banda sonora. Has d'esbrinar què passa entre aquestes dues seqüències". I això és... l'Infern.

Back to Square One: Looking Back / Tornem a Començar: Mirant Enrere

Things never stop changing around me. They never get better, or worse, they just change. The TV show I was working in collapsed. Or I quit. Still don't know what happened first. Long story short, there were financial problems and, as far as I know, a bit of rough play between some of those involved in the project. The presenter resigned, everything started falling apart pretty quickly and I didn't feel I was being treated the way I deserve. Not that I was expecting a red carpet, wine and the whole cast of the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue, if you know what I mean. Just a bit more of consideration.

So I'm back to my lonely writing times. I opened up the Work folder and checked the projects I've got stored in there. I was quite surprised. Many of them looked  better than I remembered. It often happens when you haven't seen them for a while. This doesn't apply only to written work, but that's a whole another story. I read a couple of short films I wrote on 2012, did some minor changes... I might handle them to someone to have some feedback and see if I should try to shoot them or discard them altogether.

Then I turned to feature films. I read the treatment of a film I worked in some months ago and wrote another version. I honestly think it's really good now. "Somebody could make a KILLER movie out of it" good. I've even written a selling treatment so when I'll have everything ready I'll probably pitch it and see how it goes. It wouldn't be cheap -not for our standards, in the UK or the USA 4 million euros are a reasonably small sum for a movie- but I'm really confident. It's a story set in the 1930's, with jazz, cabarets, gangsters and all, and with an amazing story based in real events. It could be great.

Since I did a selling treatment I thought in updating a couple more I had abandonned for a while, the ones for the feature films I've written so far: The Company and The Castoffs. I don't know how useful they're going to be. I might get a chance of having them done if I sell some other, more modest scripts before, but at least they helped me realise how much work I've produced during this past years and how promising they look despite the time that has passed.

I've decided to split this post into two. I'll leave it now that I've finished telling you what has happened and how I've done a bit of a retrospection. I'll write the second part soon, probably tomorrow telling you a few new things I've got in mind that, as always, might end up being something or just another bunch of files in my HDD.

I vaig dimitir.

The Company i The Castoffs.
