Clack to Click

Hi! I leave you something I wrote around January, as a part of my Story Workshop module's final assignment. It's a short film script, hope you like it and, as always, all criticisms are welcomed.

Hola!

Rewriting / Reescrivint

This last week I've been quite away from the blog. Well, I don't know if a week's a lot or not in Blog-time, but anyway... The thing is, I've been busy with my MA's Final Project. As some of you may know, for my Research Project (that's how they officially call it) I'm writing a feature film, and I've just finished rewriting its third draft. Yes. Third. If you're involved in any way in this world you know these things happen all the time, but for those who are not I guess now all the "so you're a writer, oh, how cool" thing seems a bit less realistic.

First of all let me tell you a bit about it. I'd like to sell it -or at least to give it a try- so I'm afraid I can't post anything about its plot yet, but what I can tell you is that it's an epic drama based on real events that happened on the Middle Ages. It has all the elements that make a movie of this kind good -love, death, blood, pride, honour, ambition- and the story hasn't changed much during the past six months as it's already very consistent. However, the script has suffered many changes, and that's the point of everything: no matter how times you've heard it, or if it's the first time you do, there's something you always have to keep in mind if you are or want to be a writer: writing is rewriting.

Take the first draft of my script, for instance. When I finished it, after quite a long time spent planning and developing the story -one of these days I'll tell you how I did it- and writing the script itself, it seemed to me I had reached the summit, that I had written a script each part of which was set in stone and that didn't need any further changes. Of course I was on the peak of the "writer's high" (I wrote about it here) and when I started reading it some days later I realised there were loads of things I had to improve. And here's the thing: no matter how hard you've worked on something, if you let it breathe long enough you'll end up thinking that's just a pile of crap. Or at least this is what should happen, as complacency leads you to mediocrity in whatever you do.

Then, especially if you are as radical in your opinions as I am, you have to convince yourself that is not so bad and that's worth giving it a try to improve it. And so the rewriting process begin, and you never know how many times you'll go through this path... or how many times you should actually go through it.

It has always happened to me: At school I was always trying to make things better and better, to the point I ended up not doing my homework because it wasn't worth the try; and if you ask anybody who's seen me working -especially in the pub- they may even suggest I have a bit of OCD. However, as I've had to deal with this my whole life, when I started writing I found it somehow easier to be able to say "enough" and consider a project finished. Deadlines surely are a good thing for this matter, but when you don't have them you just have to know where to stop, and that's not an easy thing to do, at least if you really have a passion about whatever you're doing.

Oh, com mola!" ja no us sembla tan real.

26-02-1991

Today I'll just post something I wrote a couple of years ago... it's not even a story, is a fictionalised mix of some memories I had -and still have- from my childhood and that I didn't want to forget. I translated into English for my master's so you have both versions available. The aim was more to reflect the point of view of a small boy rather than creating a proper story.

As some of you may have already noted this post revolves around a famous quote by Thomas Edison: "Genius is 1% inspiration and 99% transpiration". We all know the romantic idea of the artist, that creature who works driven by inspiration's divine touch, chasing beauty in a sort of creative ecstasy that gives birth to art. The feeling you get while caught in it is something you just can't explain and that I would never change for anything. Coleridge said he wrote Kubla Khan out of a dream, and some others say that's not true. I think it's possible that he wrote at least a first version of the poem right after waking up, fueled by the idea he had in his dream, and that he tweaked it later on. After all, if I wrote the outline of a film trilogy while alone at night in a train station a poet of Coleridge's sheer talent could've easily written Kubla Khan in one go... but most times before and after this moments of artistic high there are hours and hours of hard work. And here's when transpiration time comes.

To be able to create outside of those magic moments of inspiration, to focus in their work and get through it some artists have special needs: a specific place, a well established ritual... Catalan writer Quim Monzó -who I strongly recommend to my English-speaking audience- uses ear protector headphones when writing because he needs absolute silence. So far I haven't any physical conditions and I've written in many different places and environments: my room, bars, any kind of transport including a coach going from Leeds to Edinburgh -seven hours in a row-... This is an advantage, because if as Picasso said "inspiration has to find us working" being able to work virtually everywhere means that if she doesn't find you working at least you'll be ready for it. On top of that it also gives you the chance of using spare time -e.g train/bus/underground travels- to read, tweak and re-write, which in the end are the longest and most important parts of the writer's creative process. But then again squeezing your time as much as you can is something that applies more to non-professional artists, though I don't like how "professional artist" sounds.

As far as I know those who actually make a living on creation (and also many of us who want to) tend to place themselves into a routine that provides them with the right conditions and discipline to work, just as many other people do in their jobs. For instance, and talking about writers, Brian Ward once told me his method: He starts his day reading what he wrote the previous day in order to tweak it. By the moment he finishes he's already in tune with the story, ready to continue it. From then on he sits in front of his laptop during at least eight hours every day. He sets him self a minimum quantity of work for that day (say 20 pages) and doesn't stand up until the job's done with the only exception of mealtimes and other sorts of physical needs. I did have a similar working discipline myself while in Leeds -although I sometimes got lost in my work and forgot everything else e.g having lunch- and I've lost it now that I'm back home, which brings me to the problem I'm facing now: My former, chaotic writing pattern, the one I always used at home, is not the best way to get the job done... and I've got lots of things to do.

PS. You know that trilogy outline I've just said I wrote on a train station? Four and a half years later I'm still struggling to finish a more or less definitive version of the first part... I hope to have it finished before the end of the year. Loads of transpiration on my back and even more ahead, but what can I say? I love this job.

'Spinning'

Let's get started with a big -or at least quite long- thing. Here's something I wrote during the first term for my Master's "Writing for Stage and Screen" module. It was my first attempt on writing a stageplay and I had to adapt to its rules and conventions, which was a challenge I enjoyed very much and that I'll write about one of these days... I just want to say I really felt like playing when writing this script. I'm thinking of trying to find an amateur theatre company and have it produced with them and some colleagues but first of all I'd like to know your opinions on it... if somebody takes the time to read a 30-pages script, of course. As I told you all grounded criticisms are welcomed.

Welcome/Benvinguda

Hello everybody! Well... I guess the first thing I should do is introducing myself. My name's Aleix Salvans and I'm a scriptwriter. I studied Audiovisual Communication in Blanquerna-Ramon Llull University and this last year I've been studing a MA in Writing for Performance and Publication in the University of Leeds. Actually, until I'll hand in my final project on September I'll still officially be a MA student.

The aim of this blog is to have a space to publish some of the stuff write, whether they are scripts, short stories or just thoughts on the creative process and my personal understanding of it. So I welcome you to my blog! Feel free to comment whatever you want, I'll thank constructive criticism as it's very useful to improve.

PS - Most posts will be written in Catalan and English -the languages I normally write in- but maybe I'll post a few things in Spanish and French, we'll see.

Hola a tothom! Em dic Aleix Salvans i sóc guionista. Vaig estudiar Comunicació Audiovisual a Blanquerna-Universitat Ramon Llull i aquest darrer any he estat estudiant el MA in Writing for Performance and Publication de la Universitat de Leeds.
