New Stuff / Coses Noves

These past weeks I've been busy and I haven't posted anything. I had things to write about, though, and now something have made most of my activity to halt. A fire in my building has left my home -and especially my room- covered in ashes and soot, so I have some time to sit in the kitchen and write about what I've been doing lately.

First of all, after my last post I quickly found an illustrator for Wildlife via a friend. I've seen some of the work she's doing for the fables and it looks great. I have to do research on online and paper publishing to make the best of the final product. Any suggestions or pieces of advice will be welcomed.

Also, a month ago I started working as a writer in a TV late night show called Night Clap. The show combines interviews and sections about different topics such as cinema, video games, news... with a scally tone that intends to attract those watching TV at such late hours (02:00 - 03:30). During its first month, Night Clap has been broadcasted statewide by TV Nacional A but it'll now switch to Ver-T, a group of local stations owned by Atresmedia that covers "only" Madrid, Valencia parts of Andalusia but has better audience rates, especially considering that its time slot will also switch to prime time. My job consists in editing the show's scripts, overseeing them so everything works well and, from time to time, writing some of the co-hosts' scripts and video reports.

Well, they've just told us they'll have to carefully clean the whole flat (eg. book by book), clean the heating/AC vents and quite probably also paint the walls and ceilings. What a disaster... Anyway, I'm also struggling to finish turning The Company into a comic book. The work was somewhat easy during most of the process but I've been stuck near the end for a while. I don't know exactly why but it seems to be much harder to adapt than the rest of the script.

I've got a few other projects to work in... but with all this, the mess at home and the Christmas family meals I'll have to make the most of my time or I'll end up leaving most of them aside until next year. Hope I won't. Speaking about which... I'm into something that could be great, but I'll tell you about it once it's sure (if it ever is).

Aquestes últimes setmanes he estat ocupat i no he penjat res.

Espero no fer-ho. Parlant d'això... m'he ficat en una cosa que podria ser genial, però ja us en parlaré quan sigui segura (si ho és).

Words & Images / Paraules i Imatges

These last months -and especially recently- I've written quite an amount of material that require visual elements to different extents. Words are visual, too, but we'll leave this matter aside as we know what we're talking about: Illustrations.

First of all there's Wildlife. Its five fables are a product by their own right, but some drawings, even (or particularly) if simple ones would provide them with an additional emotional input that would improve them greatly. Xavier Ren offered to do them but after some delays and his departure to the UK he couldn't, so at the moment I'm looking for someone else who is interested, as I don't plan to publish them in any format until they're properly accompanied.

There's also a short story I wrote. It's a little adventure that takes place in The Castoffs' universe. It's not much related to the main story but was intended to work as a first contact with the world and some of its characters. The plan was to make an animated comic book, in the style of Ryan Woodward's Bottom of the Ninth but much simpler. The project was put in an indefinite halt, but the story is still there. I never wrote the script, I just have the treatment, and I think it would be a good idea to finish it. For the future or just for the sake of practising and "keeping in touch" with The Castoffs universe. Speaking about which, take a look at this. It looks great, doesn't it?

After finishing Wildlife I started writing what I thought to be a "story with illustrations". As I kept writing it turned out to be an "illustrated story". The images were not to be a key complement but a part without which the product wouldn't make any sense. It's a dark tale about a little boy and his fears and, as such, vivid illustrations accompanying -or substituting- the words would make it much more intense and meaningful than if it was just "plain" text. I'm still re-writing this one and I think it could be really good if it had a proper illustrated counterpart.

Last but not least, there's The Company, my MA's graduation project. I started converting it from its original format (a feature-lenght film script) into a comic book script. Well, some prefer to call them graphic novels but, as Neil Gaiman said, it's pretty much like thinking you're a hooker and suddenly realising you're a "lady of the night". Re-writing The Company as a comic book has made me really aware of its specificities, possibilities and drawbacks way more than the other projects. Maybe it was because of its lenght -it'll be around 160 pages- or the adapting factor itself, that forced me to find a way to portray in a comic book what I had imagined as shots and takes.

This review of some of my finished or not-so projects helps me seeing that I've actually being more productive than I thought -I always feel I haven't done a thing after a few inactive days- but also that I've tended to explore a field that's new to me. Writing scripts is also combining images and text -sound in this case- but the order I've exposed the projects in shows the range that goes from a story with one of a few illustrations to a comic book, It's something I hadn't thought much about, and it somehow opens some new, interesting options to work in and to learn from, the bottom line of all this being that I NEED A BLOODY ARMY OF ILLUSTRATORS. If someone's interested -especially on Wildlife or the little boy's dark tale- just let me know. You never know when you'll start an interesting collaboration.

Bad Clients, Lessons Learnt / Mals Clients, Lliçons Apreses

I don't usually rant against anybody -before you disagree, I don't rant HERE- but there are sometimes when people make really hard not to. So I'm going to tell you a thing that happened during August and that made me think a bit. I won't mention any of the other involved parts by their names because I haven't asked their permission to do so and it could result in their reputation being damaged or they simply wouldn't like me to write about them. Two of them I care about and one of them I don't give a damn and I wished everybody knew his name, but revealing it would expose the others.

Some good friends told me they had been hired to produce a music video and asked me if I fancied being its scriptwriter. They said the client wanted a really good job, told me the resources and conditions he had and the deadline, which happened to be in about a month. We didn't have much time to write the script, shoot the video and edit it. But as it happens most times I jumped right into it even knowing that I'd have work fast. It was my "holiday" month -I wasn't in my hometown, etc- but anyway I wanted to do it. I listened to the song, wrote down some ideas and then I finished a first draft. I spoke to my colleagues to have some feedback, and then wrote a second draft, which in turn was handed in to the client after the director tweaked it a bit and changed a couple of things. So far so good.

But here's when things started going wrong. The client took a long, looong time to read our proposal. Long in like in taking two weeks when we had six to have everything done. After the two weeks he said he didn't like the proposal at all and wanted us to write another one. "Fine", I said, "let's have a Skype meeting so you can tell me exactly what you have in mind". We scheduled a meeting. He called it off at the last minute so we rescheduled it for the following day. He didn't go online neither answered any of our phone calls. Later he said he had gone on holidays... and he hasn't said a word ever since. I wrote two drafts, my colleagues did their share of work too and spent some money to improve their equipment and do the job the best they could... No contract was signed before we started working, it was all done on good faith. Huge mistake. The client was an unprofessional, unreliable liability -or a cunt, as you prefer- and we didn't have much to claim the money he owed us. Funny thing is he found somebody else that worked for less money and a month after the last time I knew of him he released his single with a music video... which didn't resemble our proposal but seemed that had drawn some inspiration from it in some details. Just wonderful. But considering my colleagues are making a living on that world we thought it would be better if we forgot about the whole thing, and this is why nobody's mentioned by his name. Except from mine, of course, but I don't care much as I don't work much there and, most importantly, I don't believe in people's good will but in their professionality, and I've never liked working with people who doesn't have even a slight touch of it.

Were we naive? Undoubtedly, but as far as I'm concerned I've learnt from this and I don't think I'll be fooled again by a cheap, amateur DJ that wants to save a few hundred euros. It'll be somebody else in a completely different situation, but not in one that resembles this one.

Local Fixer

As it happens with most blogs I've left A Lad Who Writes aside during summer because... well, because it was summer. I wasn't at home, I didn't have a proper Internet connection and although I had -and still have- a few things to write about I was too busy doing... let's just say I was doing other things.

Before going on holidays I worked for some days in a project I consider myself lucky to have been a part of. Paul, a great professor and cinema professional who I can also call a friend, asked me to work as a local fixer in a 3D documentary he was about to shoot at the Institut Guttmann Neurorehabilitation Hospital, where they treat patients with spine cord injuries and brain damage. I immediately jumped into it. I found Paul and Martin (the DOP) a flat to stay, translated everything they needed, called/booked taxis to go wherever we had to, did some paperwork, kept the CCO informed and as happy with us as I could... and also took them two out for some drinks. That's pretty much what fixing's about, making sure the team can focus on the shooting as everything else's been taken care of. I was also the documentary's sound mixer so I was pretty busy all the time. It was really good experience I learnt a lot from, not only professionally -which I obviously did- but also as a human being.

Shooting at a neurorehabilitation clinic was as tough as it sounds. Or maybe even more, as it struck me although I was aware of what were we going to see. I'm not talking only about the patients but also about the doctors, nurses and physiotherapists in there who have to put up with all that every day. Kudos to them. It may sound as a truism but when you see people suffering as they push as hard as they can to earn every inch of their recovery it moves you and makes you realise how lucky you are no matter how big you think your problems are. An example: I was following Paul and Martin (Morlock, the DOP) as they shot, carrying authorisation forms the patients had to sign so we could use the footage. As they shot many of them at a time and then they would move on I doing my job while following them. At a certain point I "complained" about how they kept me running up and down. One of the patients (on a wheelchair) said "Kid, I wish I could be running after those two". Not that he was offended -he told me it was a joke as soon as he saw my expression changing- but it makes you think. Or maybe I'm just stupid and don't think before I speak. Make your choice. Be as it may, those few days of hard work as a producer turned out to be one of the most interesting -and fulfilling- experiences I've had this year, and I can't wait to see the documentary when it's done.

Trieu vosaltres mateixos.

During its late May conference -which was quite interesting and I should had written about- the Catalan Audiovisual Market announced the Transmedia Scriptwriting Competition, organised along with Catalonia's Associated Scriptwriters. Given the state of things around here, not taking part of if was absolutely out of the question, so I've been working on a project with two friends.

The idea is pretty straightforward. Although it has changed a lot it's still slightly based on a TV-series' project I wrote for one of my MA's modules. As the post's title says it's a sitcom, but I'm a bit reluctant to using this word because I don't think the project fits into the genre as we know it nowadays. What we're doing is slightly less character-driven and -God forgive me- somehow less "shallow" than the average sitcom. This only means that I'd like to introduce more complex storylines than those we usually find, but the series still falls under the "sitcom" category because, after all, it's a comedy featuring characters that share a common space. I've never been especially good at writing comedy, so here comes yet another challenge as I'm the main scriptwriter. My two mates are focusing on the visual treatment -which is also interesting as we've drawn inspiration from some late 80s/early90s landmarks- and the three of us are working in both the story as a whole and on what makes this project different from everything else I've done: the transmedia features.

Well, actually this is not exactly right. As a matter of fact, my first experiences with transmedia projects were during my specialization course, where I outlined transmedia and crossmedia projects and developed a couple of them to a certain extent. One of them was a TV series, and the other one was an event aimed at schoolchildren, planned as if it was to be organised by my hometown's city hall as a part of the 75th anniversary of it bombing during the Spanish Civil War, involving the children's participation through different sources and media. Be that as it may, this new project is my first experience in designing and writing a full-scale transmedia project. Which brings me to the explanation of what a transmedia project is.

As its own name suggests, transmedia projects are those in which the story is told using not one but multiple platforms, using the "new" technologies to deepen and expand it, thus creating a different experience that leaves a greater part of the storytelling process up to the audience, that chooses what contents they consume, how and when, and this choice affects their understanding of the story. In this particular case, using the TV series -that is a whole product in its own right- as the main platform, the public has the possibility, if they wish, of exploring the character's lifes through other media, thus discovering elements that complete or modify the story and solve questions that are left unanswered in the series. As I see it, at least in this project, everything works as if it was a real story and you had the chance of peeping into their lifes through different windows and holes in the walls. Moreover, we've thought in taking a step further, allowing the audience to play a small but significant role in the story.

As you can imagine all this adds quite a lot of complexity and work to the already long task of developing an only-on-TV project. The deadline's August 31 so we still got time to get everything ready. Our aim is to provide a few extra things apart from those asked for by the organisation, including the full script for its pilot episode and some samples of how the contents on other platforms would look like. I hope we'll have everything ready on time, there's a bit more than a month left but there's also a long way to go.

Reading / Llegint

I've left the blog aside for the past couple of months. Not that I want to use excuses -after all you find the time to do some blogging if you REALLY want to and have something you feel the urge to say-. Thing is, I have quite a few things to say, but when I had the time to write about them I chose doing other things instead. Sincerity first.

Having said that, let's get started. Last month I was asked to be a reader. That is, to read a novel's draft and to provide my notes and thoughts about it, specifying what I did like, what I did not, how I thought the book could be improved... so everything was basically about writing a long, in-depth report about it. Of course I can't tell you about the novel itself, but I can write about the experience, which turned out to be really interesting. So, I knew I was capable of doing it but I also needed to find a way to do it I found myself comfortable with and that could be easily understood. And most of all I had to try and remember all the narrative theory I've been told over the years in case I had to make well-founded comments or suggestions on the novel's structure.

The good thing is I realised -once again, I guess- that I already have all the theory within my head and I use it unconsciously when I write, so I could do all this analysis without actually thinking about it. It just sort of came. So, I first read the novel as if I was a normal reader (if being a reader has ever been or is "normal" anymore) and then I just wrote down what I did I feel about it when I finished in terms of satisfaction, as a customer satisfaction report, if you wish. Having done that, I read the novel again at a much slower pace, analysing it carefully and paying attention at all the details, writing notes on nearly each page on anything I thought was good, not so good, interesting, pointing at some plot points and its effects on the structure and the overall feeling of the novel, how I perceived every event as a reader... I don't think I had done such a deep work on a book in a long, long time. Let's face it, my university reports on books were mostly the result of a quick, diagonal read and a talent for writing a lot without saying much.

I learned quite a bit doing this job and it was a really good experience I'd be willing to repeat. As a writer I don't usually see the mistakes or weak points of my own work until somebody else points them out for me. I guess it happens to most of us. But giving your thoughts on somebody else's work is also to reaffirm your own style and understanding of writing, and in addition to that you get new inputs through working deeply into another writer's work-in-progress. And this is truly a privilege.

Note: Opinion holder / Nota: Opinador

A few days ago one of the editors in NacióGranollers asked me if I'd like to write a monthly opinion article on the newspaper. Being as drawn as I am to giving my opinion even when nobody cares about it, imagine when I'm asked for it. You can read my first article here. That is, if you can read Catalan... The articles are supposed to be mainly about local topics so I'll only translate them into English if I think they can be of some interest. Besides, I'd like to leave my more political-oriented opinions out of this blog, which I see as something more exclusively professional, so you're going to seldom see them here.

Note: What do you write about? / Nota: Sobre què escrius?

The question above is one of those things you're asked quite often when you tell someone you write. And it's not that much of a silly question as it may seem. I don't know how it works in the other arts, but with writing is quite simple: you write what you know. I think Mark Twain's the one who's said to have coined the sentence, but many more must had thought the same before. However, being a bit more precise and from my own experience, writing (or scriptwriting) is trying to find the perfect blend of experience, imagination and skill. And time. The mix takes loads of it, and the creative process may differ depending on which ingredient do you use the most.

Experience. Even if your story is far away from your coordinates, experience is decisive when approaching the characters' personalities, the conflicts between them and so on. And it doesn't even have to be your own, it can be something you've read or heard about. As a matter of fact I've found myself recalling conversations I've had about others' issues and their way to see and understand them has been really helpful. And then of course there's the anecdotes. Ah, the anecdotes.

Imagination. You can't just write what happened to you/others just the way it happened. Well, you can but it may also get you in trouble. So even if you tell something that actually happened, if you get to understand what lies beneath you can use your imagination to craft a story where essentially the same happens but nothing resembles the original "source", e.g mixing and expanding different experiences and use them in contexts they have nothing to do with.

Skill. Once you've got your story, and assuming it's good enough, making it grow and become something that appeals your audience, whether if they are readers, producers, viewers... only depends on your skill. You've got the content, now it's time to give it an attractive shape. Points of view, descriptions, order... everything matters, and finding the best way to tell a story can be as important as the story itself.

And that's it... I may be completely wrong, it's just a random thought I've had while working on different projects at the same time and realising a couple of them had details in common because they are both dragging from the same experience. But this can also work if properly done. I don't remember the exact sentence but David Bowie said something like "I've been singing about the same things for thirty years and nobody seems to be angry about it". If you do it like Bowie it's just perfect. And then there's Albert Espinosa (not Spanish and Catalan readers are lucky not to know about him).

I temps.

Competitions / Concursos

Some days ago my friend Esteve told me about a short stories' writing competition. He was looking for design competitions for Xavi and him to take part in and he came across it. It's a quite important one, that has had a bunch of relatively known winners. I thought it wouldn't be a bad idea to give it a shot. I don't expect to win -it would be awesome though, the winner takes 6.000€- but entering a competition with really good writers involved is a challenge I'd like to take up.

I've been working on it since Friday and in two and a half days I've managed to write a short story. Well, its first draft, but you know what I'm talking about. Surprisingly enough I haven't had much problems to fit in the 10-page limit. Maybe writing the fables has been useful for this purpose, as I've always had problems with word counts. Just to put an example I had to ask for an extension for my MA's final project. It ended up being roughly twice as long as it was supposed to be. Anyway, the deadline's on mid June so I have plenty of time to trim, polish and embellish the story... or to write a new one altogether. Besides, it's the first time I've been seriously writing in Spanish in a while. Not that I have lost my ability -if I ever had any of that- but it's been funny to realise how I did some misspelling mistakes I thought I had left behind long ago.

Concerning the other projects... I've got to talk with Xavi about the fables' illustrations and I have scheduled a Skype meeting with Esteve for this evening to work on Old Folks. We've been rambling a bit and we need to focus to push the project forward. I have some other ideas in mind for other projects, but I'll try to hold them as long as possible. Too many projects mean never finishing anything and, after all, it doesn't matter how hard or for how long you work if you never have a properly finished work in your hands. That's something that's taken a while for me to realise -and as far as I know it's quite common- but that I'll try to keep in mind.

Surprise! A finished project / Sorpresa! Un projecte acabat

I had to keep it in secret for a while but it's about time to make an announcement. It's a nice coincidence that today, April 2, is the anniversary of Hans Christian Andersen's birth.

I spent the past month writing short stories. I started writing them for myself, but after a while I thought "hey, you're a writer, you're not supposed to keep your work for yourself unless you don't want to make a living on it". It's my first attempt at writing fables -short tales featuring animals and with a moral message- but I'm quite satisfied. In addition to that, I found it was a good way to start and actually finish a project in a relatively short period of time. After all, having it actually done is one of the first writing/creating tips on any list, and that's what I did. While I was about to write the the last fable I thought any good fable compilation needs some good illustrations, so asked my long-time associate Xavier Ren if he'd like to provide them. He accepted, so although we still don't have a publishing date because there's work left to do, I can tell you it will be something else than "only" text.

The compilation, entitled Wildlife, contains five fables. It will most probably be published only in electronic format via Amazon and a few other plaftorms but doing a short-run printed version is not completely out of the table. I'll keep you informed about it. And that's pretty much it, such a short post for something so important!

PS. I forgot to say I wrote the fables in Catalan, but I'll translate them into Spanish and English too.

Us mantindré informats.

The music video's out! / Ha sortit el videoclip!

And that was pretty much everything I had to say hahaha. This morning Cosmik's record label WeLoveAsere has released his latest single -and its music video, which I wrote-. Always been more of a rock guy, but what mattered here was being able to deliver what the client wanted. Hope you enjoy it!

A few days ago I applied to a job offer in the video game industry. I've received an email this afternoon saying they've got better candidates and so they're not going to proceed with my application. However, at least it made me assemble a new writing portfolio, aimed for that particular job. So, as I have it, here it is.

Lists - My Top 10 albums

As I did with fiction books a while ago, here's my music album's Top 10. I've left out many albums I love, picking just then of them hasn't been easy. As it happened with the first list I'm not stating they're the best ever -there are a few unmissable landmarks, though- but just some of the ones that have shocked, liked or influenced me the most. I'm linking a song for each album in case you want to know what do they sound like.

So here they come. With no particular order:

Judas Priest - British Steel (1980).

Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin II (1969).

Fleetwood Mac - Rumours (1977).

Sopa de Cabra - Ben Endins (1991).

The Hellacopters - By the Grace of God (2002).

The Who - Quadrophenia (1973).

Kortatu - Azken Guda Dantza (1988).

Johnny Cash - At Folsom Prison (1968).

David Bowie - The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars (1972).

Guns N' Roses - Appetite for Destruction (1987).

February's over at last / Per fi s'ha acabat el febrer

Hi everybody! I hope you didn't think I was gone for good. As my problems are not the blog's topic I'll just say I've been through rough times and this prevented me from posting here. I want to forget about February 2013 as quickly as possible so I'll move on. Having not written on the blog doesn't mean I haven't written at all. Crises are huge creativity boosts and this past month I have certainly been quite productive in both ideas and actual results. I'll just go through it to sum up what I have been up to so I can continue blogging normally.

- I introduced some changes on my novel. The events are pretty much the same, the hows and whys have varied significantly. The novel's around 9,000 words now, not much but anyway, it's a long-term project and I'm actually quite satisfied with where it's going.

- I have been working on Old Folks. There are still loads of work left to do and I'm falling behind. Our new team member has come up with some really interesting ideas and now we have to find the right way to combine them with our own.

- The music video's release has been delayed until March 14. I don't know the exact reason why, but meanwhile the record company has uploaded a teaser. Making teasers for music videos doesn't make much sense to me but well, at least there's something to watch.

- I have also started working again on a movie idea I had abandonned. I'm just gathering ideas for a second outline but it's nice to work on it again. It's not an easily feasible project but still it would be much easier than, say, The Company or The Castoffs.

- A friend of mine came up with and idea for a short film a few days ago. I'm trying to develop it, I'll tell you more if it doesn't quickly fall into the darkness. You know it happens quite often.

- Last but definetely not least, I have been working hard on a new project. I won't tell you about it now -it's going to be kind of a secret until the end of the month- but hopefully I'll have Xavier Ren's collaboration and it will be ready in less than two months. It's a small, humble project, but I'm very excited about it. It's one of those things you start doing for yourself and then you realise it actually has some possibilities.

I think that's it by now... more posts soon!

Hola a tothom!

- He estat treballant en l'Old Folks.

The Castoffs - Sneak Peek (III)

INT. FREIGHTER. HOLD. - DAY.

RIELE opens her eyes. She's sitting in a dark corner, hidden between two barrel rows. An engine-like noise indicates we're in an airship. She slowly stands up, making us realise she's barefooted. Covered with an old, worn away cloak that hides her completely, she crosses the hold to the other side. There's a line of bull-eyes on the wall. RIELE walks to one of them and looks outside. At her left there's only desert. On the right, though, there's a big mountain's silhouette, a tall and green oasis surrounded by a sandy and rocky ocean. The freighter shakes: it's going up. We can see RIELE's smile under the cloak. Steps and voices are heard coming closer. RIELE quickly turns back and goes to her hideout.

INT. VAIXELL DE CÀRREGA. BODEGA. - DIA.

The Castoffs - State of things / L'estat de les coses

After a long time, two days ago I eventually managed to finish The Castoffs' third draft! And when I say a long time I REALLY mean it. The second version of the script dates back to March 2011 so it's taken nearly two years to rewrite it. Not that I've been working on it all this time -there have been many things that have kept me away from it- but it feels good to have it finished at last. It somehow means that, despite the latest setbacks, the project's moving forward.

Well, "setbacks" may be too harsh. Let's just say that during the last couple of months we -that's Xavier Ren and me- had been thinking of and starting developing a side project -about which I wanted to tell you soon-. I had already done some attempts and drafts on the story and I was looking forward to start properly working on it. However, some professional issues have forced us to postpone it until further notice. I have no idea about when are we going to get back to it, but I want to believe it will be in a relatively short period of time. The ideas we had were good, we were on the right path... I think that by June we could have had something really cool and that could had been commercially successful... but we'll have to leave it on hold and wait for the right time to keep on with it.

Back to the script... I've got quite a long and boring work ahead. When we first started with the whole The Castoffs thing we didn't know how much it would grow, and so I didn't consider writing it in English. I don't think it was good enough then but anyway I didn't even think about it. So since then on I've been writing most of The Castoffs' stuff in Catalan, with only some bits and pieces -mostly from older drafts- translated into English for pitching purposes. So now I'll have to take my 88-page script and start going through it once again to translate it and work it in English from then on. As it happens when you're translating your own stuff I'll probably change things here and there on the way so I'll end up with a sort of 3.5 version of the script... which is not bad but can be tiring when you've just finished redrafting. I guess I should also translate the rest of the documents (e.g character bible, environment descriptions, synopses...) but I don't want to think about it. By now I'll focus on this and on the Old Folks Project, that's going all right but I think needs an impulse. See you soon!

While shooting Cosmik's music video this past couple of weeks, I found myself saying the same sentence quite a few times. The situation was always pretty much this one: We would shoot a take. Right after that somebody -the actors, the client...- would come and ask to take a look at it, and if we did they'd say they didn't like it for some or some other reason. Then, I'd say "If you see the threads, all the magic goes away".

Cinema -and what has spawned from it since that distant day in 1895- is nothing but a forgery. Movies, TV series, documentaries, commercials... are fictional or fictionalised stories told in a way that doesn't have much to do with how we actually see and understand things in real life. We don't live in close-ups, cross-cutting, flashbacks, montage sequences... But when we watch a movie we "read" it through a set of rules -pretty much invented by Edwin S. Porter and David Wark Griffith during the 1910s-. As with oral language, you can understand it even if you don't know the rules as such. But as it also happens with both languages you can't create anything proper if you don't study its rules and ways (e.g rethoric). Audiovisual production -leaving the writing aside- is a process with many parts involved and with loads of rules, techniques and methods we use to create the best possible product, even when everything starts falling apart during the shooting. And it happens more often that you'd imagine. Therefore I don't think it's fair to judge a part of it halfway through if you don't know the big picture. Moreover, doing it can either change the product -probably for worse- if the outsider opinion's taken into consideration, or create tension between him and the team, especially if the aforementioned outsider's the client. So, and I think there would be a general agreement among media professionals, it's better not to show anything to anybody unless you really have to or you actually want their opinion. In the first case you'd probably have time to do a rough cut -allowing you to choose the right takes and make your idea clear- and in the second it would be your choice so it wouldn't be that much of a problem. But having people looking at your takes and giving their opinion on it all the time while you work can't have any good effects at all.

To sum up, and without having any intention of offending anybody whatsoever: What you will see, what really matters, is the finished product. Even if you've paid for it to be made. If you have any comments or complaints feel free to make us know so we can bear them in mind next time or try and do another cut before the final release. But do it once it's done, or ask for a rough cut to watch while reading the script. Don't interfere just because you didn't like a teeny-tiny part of it. Be patient and let the professionals do their job. After all, would you criticise a magician because he doesn't like having you peeping on his tricks?
