During its late May conference -which was quite interesting and I should had written about- the Catalan Audiovisual Market announced the Transmedia Scriptwriting Competition, organised along with Catalonia's Associated Scriptwriters. Given the state of things around here, not taking part of if was absolutely out of the question, so I've been working on a project with two friends.
The idea is pretty straightforward. Although it has changed a lot it's still slightly based on a TV-series' project I wrote for one of my MA's modules. As the post's title says it's a sitcom, but I'm a bit reluctant to using this word because I don't think the project fits into the genre as we know it nowadays. What we're doing is slightly less character-driven and -God forgive me- somehow less "shallow" than the average sitcom. This only means that I'd like to introduce more complex storylines than those we usually find, but the series still falls under the "sitcom" category because, after all, it's a comedy featuring characters that share a common space. I've never been especially good at writing comedy, so here comes yet another challenge as I'm the main scriptwriter. My two mates are focusing on the visual treatment -which is also interesting as we've drawn inspiration from some late 80s/early90s landmarks- and the three of us are working in both the story as a whole and on what makes this project different from everything else I've done: the transmedia features.
Well, actually this is not exactly right. As a matter of fact, my first experiences with transmedia projects were during my specialization course, where I outlined transmedia and crossmedia projects and developed a couple of them to a certain extent. One of them was a TV series, and the other one was an event aimed at schoolchildren, planned as if it was to be organised by my hometown's city hall as a part of the 75th anniversary of it bombing during the Spanish Civil War, involving the children's participation through different sources and media. Be that as it may, this new project is my first experience in designing and writing a full-scale transmedia project. Which brings me to the explanation of what a transmedia project is.
As its own name suggests, transmedia projects are those in which the story is told using not one but multiple platforms, using the "new" technologies to deepen and expand it, thus creating a different experience that leaves a greater part of the storytelling process up to the audience, that chooses what contents they consume, how and when, and this choice affects their understanding of the story. In this particular case, using the TV series -that is a whole product in its own right- as the main platform, the public has the possibility, if they wish, of exploring the character's lifes through other media, thus discovering elements that complete or modify the story and solve questions that are left unanswered in the series. As I see it, at least in this project, everything works as if it was a real story and you had the chance of peeping into their lifes through different windows and holes in the walls. Moreover, we've thought in taking a step further, allowing the audience to play a small but significant role in the story.
As you can imagine all this adds quite a lot of complexity and work to the already long task of developing an only-on-TV project. The deadline's August 31 so we still got time to get everything ready. Our aim is to provide a few extra things apart from those asked for by the organisation, including the full script for its pilot episode and some samples of how the contents on other platforms would look like. I hope we'll have everything ready on time, there's a bit more than a month left but there's also a long way to go.
Durant les conferències que van organitzar a finals de maig -que van ser pou interessants i sobre les quals hauria d'haver escrit- el Mercat Audiovisual de Catalunya va anunciar el seu Concurs de Guió Transmèdia, organitzat conjuntament amb Guionistes Associats de Catalunya. En vista de com estan les coses per aquí, no prendre-hi part no era una opció, de manera que he estat treballant en un projecte amb dos companys.
La idea és bastant senzilla. Tot i que ha canviat molt encara està lleugerament basada en un projecte de sèrie de televisió que vaig escriure per una de les assignatures del meu màster. Tal com anuncia el títol del post és una sitcom, però sóc una mica reaci a fer servir aquesta paraula perquè no crec que el projecte encaixi en el gènere tal i com el coneixem avui dia. El que estem fent es recolza una mica menys en els personatges i, d'alguna manera -que el Senyor em perdoni- és una mica menys "superficial" que les sitcoms habituals. Això només vol dir que m'agradaria introduir trames més complexes de les que trobem normalment, però la sèrie segueix entrant dins de la categoria de sitcom perquè al cap i a la fi, és una comèdia que presenta personatges que comparteixen un mateix espai. Mai he estat especialment bo escrivint comèdia, de manera que és un repte perquè en sóc el guionista principal. Els meus dos companys es concentren en el tractament visual -que també és interessant ja que ens hem inspirat en alguns mites dels darrers 80/primers 90- i tots tres estem treballant tant en la història com un tot com en el que fa que aquest projecte sigui diferent de tot el que he fet: l'element transmèdia.

La veritat és que les meves primeres experiències amb projectes transmèdia van ser durant el curs d'especialització que vaig fer, on vaig esbossar alguns projectes transmèdia i crossmedia i en vaig desenvolupar un parell en més profunditat. Un d'ells era una sèrie de televisió, i l'altre era un event pensat per a nens, planificat com si hagués de ser organitzat per l'ajuntament del meu poble com a part dels actes del 75è aniversari del seu bombardeig durant la Guerra Civil Espanyola, involucrant els nens i fent-los participar a través de diverses fonts i mitjans. No obstant això, aquest nou projecte és la meva primera experiència en dissenyar i escriure un projecte transmèdia complet. Cosa que em duu a l'explicació de què és un projecte transmèdia.
Com el seu nom indica, els projectes transmèdia són aquells en els quals la història s'explica fent servir no només una sinó múltiples plataformes, utilitzant les "noves" tecnologies per aprofundir-hi i expandir-la, creant una experiència diferent que deixa una part més gran de la narració en mans de l'audiència, que tria quins continguts consumeix, com i quan, i aquesta tria afecta la seva comprensió de la història. En aquest cas particular, fent servir la sèrie de televisió -que és un producte complet en sí mateix- com a plataforma principal, el públic té la possibilitat, si vol, d'explorar les vides dels personatges a través d'altres mitjans, descobrint elements que completen o modifiquen la història i que resolen preguntes que han quedat sense resposta a la sèrie. Tal i com ho veig, al menys en aquest projecte, tot funciona com si fos una història real i tinguessis l'oportunitat d'espiar les seves vides a través de diferents finestres i forats a la paret. A més, també hem pensat en dur-ho un pas més endavant, permetent als espectadors que tinguin un paper petit però significant en la història.
Com us podeu imaginar tot plegat afegeix molta complexitat i feina a la tasca, ja de per sí prou llarga, de desenvolupar un projecte per a televisió. La data límit és el 31 d'agost o sigui que encara tenim temps per preparar-ho tot. El nostre objectiu és aportar uns quants materials extra apart d'aquells requerits per l'organització, incloent el guió complet del capítol pilot i alguns exemples de quin aspecte tindrien els continguts de les diverses plataformes. Espero que ho tinguem tot llest a temps, queda una mica més d'un mes però també hi ha un llarg camí a fer.
